Are you the proud owner of a new Candle Castle candle? You are probably eager to light it and enjoy its scent, but before you do, we have some helpful candle care tips to follow so you can get the most out of your candle. Below is some of our tried-and-true advice for ensuring a safe, fragrant, and long-lasting burn from every Candle Castle candle.

How to Make Your Candle Castle Candle Last Longer

If you are looking to get a lasting aroma from your Candle Castle candle, follow these four essential steps every single time you light it.

Allow a full melt pool on the first burn — When you first light your candle, let the wax melt all the way to the edges of the container before blowing it out. This usually takes between two and four hours depending on the jar size. Soy wax has a memory, and if you extinguish it too early, the candle will tunnel on every subsequent burn — creating a deep well down the centre and leaving a thick wall of unused wax around the edges. That wasted wax means wasted fragrance and up to 30% shorter burn time. Allow one hour per inch of candle diameter.

Trim the wick to 5mm before every burn — Using a wick trimmer or scissors, trim your wick to approximately 5 millimetres before every single lighting. This is the optimal height for an even, steady flame that minimises soot buildup. A trimmed wick stays centred, prevents uneven melting, and reduces the risk of glass overheating. An untrimmed wick mushrooms at the tip, producing a larger flickering flame that generates black soot, burns through wax faster, and can overheat the container. Always trim when the wax is cool and remove debris before relighting.

Remove debris from the wax pool — After centring and trimming the wick, make sure the candle surface is free of any wick trimmings, match heads, or other debris. These fragments can reignite and create a flame that is too large, posing a safety issue and potentially causing the glass jar to crack or shatter.

Strike a match and enjoy — Once the wick is trimmed and the surface is clean, light your candle using a long match or an extended lighter. Light the wick near its base, not just at the very tip. This helps ensure the flame catches evenly and the candle begins burning properly from the start.

Candle-Burning Tips and Other Ways to Make Your Candle Last Longer

Beyond our initial steps above, here are a few more candle care tips from our experts at Candle Castle.

 • A draft is your candle's worst enemy. Keep your candle away from ceiling fans, open windows, high traffic areas, and air conditioning vents. A moving flame causes uneven burning, produces black soot, and consumes wax faster.
 • Never leave a candle unattended, and keep any that you are burning out of reach of children and pets. Always place candles on a stable, flat, heat-resistant surface.
 • Extinguish a candle if it repeatedly smokes or flickers, or if the flame is too high. Let it cool, trim the wick to 5mm, check for drafts, and then relight.
 • Burn your candle between one and four hours at a time for best results. If you wish to enjoy it longer, extinguish after four hours, let it cool for two hours, recenter and trim the wick, then relight.
 • Discontinue use when approximately ½ inch of wax remains to ensure a safe burn. Burning below this level can overheat the container and damage the surface underneath.
 • The smaller the candle, the less fragrant it may be. Try burning complementary smaller candles side by side, or place your candle in a smaller room where fragrance can concentrate.

FAQs on Candle Care Tips

If I use your candle care tips, how long can I expect my candle to burn?
If you follow our tips for making your candle last longer, a standard 200g Candle Castle jar candle should deliver approximately 40 to 50 hours of clean burn time. Our larger 300g jars can achieve 60 to 70 hours. These estimates assume you trim the wick before every burn, allow a full melt pool each session, and never exceed four hours of continuous burning.
What are the benefits of using cotton wicks?
All Candle Castle candles use natural cotton wicks. When properly maintained, cotton wicks burn cleanly and evenly without producing the metallic residue that zinc-core wicks can leave behind. Cotton wicks provide a more consistent flame height, enhance scent throw by creating a steady melt pool, and are free from lead and other harmful metals.
What types of candles does Candle Castle offer?
Candle Castle offers a wide range of hand-poured soy wax candles including jar candles in multiple sizes, pillar candles, taper candles, tealights, and votives. Our fragrance collections include floral scents like Jasmine and Lavender, woody scents like Sandalwood and Cedarwood, fresh scents like Linen Breeze and Eucalyptus, and gourmand scents like French Vanilla and Cinnamon Chai.
What happens if I don't trim my candle's wick?
If you do not trim the wick, it will develop a carbon mushroom at the tip which causes a larger, unstable flame. Larger flames lead to uneven burning, excessive soot buildup on the inside of the glass, faster wax consumption, and an increased risk of the container overheating or cracking.
What's the best way to light my candle?
After trimming your wick and removing any debris, use a long match or an extended-reach lighter. Light the wick near its base rather than just the very tip — this helps the flame catch evenly and prevents the wick from bending to one side.
What's the best way to extinguish my candle?
Avoid blowing out your candle — it sends hot wax splattering and fills the room with smoke. Use a candle snuffer to starve the flame of oxygen, or use a wick dipper to gently push the lit wick into the melted wax and then straighten it back. The dipping method produces zero smoke and coats the wick for easier relighting.
How should I store my candles when not in use?
Store candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. UV rays fade the colour and break down fragrance oils. Replace the lid after the wax cools to keep dust out and seal fragrance in. Properly stored soy candles maintain quality for 12 to 18 months.
